I went on a trip to Havasu last April and when I got back I was really sad with the missed photo opportunities. I had taken pictures but nothing I took did any justice. When I got back I read everything I could on landscape photography, determined to never miss a photo opportunity again. I started with an iPhone and then to a first generation Canon Rebel. I upgraded to a Canon T5 last December and am in the process of further honing my skills to justify the purchase of better equipment. Though I still think that the camera only does so much in making great shots, the photographer does the bulk.
My passion is hiking. I figured photography is a good skill to have when I'm out and about. I'm blessed to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the world; southern Utah - nestled between some of the greatest national parks around!
I don't really know where I plan to go from here. For now I'm just content to capture some of the great sights around me.

- This trail is often passed up for the Angels Landing trail but the view at the end is 700 feet above Angels and is second to none! Do not kid yourself, this is a difficult hike if not well conditioned. It is an 8-mile in and out hike with elevation gains of 2,600 feet! While the view at the end is incredible, don’t forget to look over your shoulder while hiking for some equally incredible views! The view above is about 1 mile from the trail end.

- Lose yourself among these rolling petrified sand dunes. Depending on how far you want to hike, you’re looking at up to a 4 mile round trip. The vortex is at the very end and worth the extra effort. I’ve done this hike with my young children but it is rough on them. I’d rate it as easy to moderate with some elevation gains. The views from the top of the dunes are incredible!

- I have a hard time choosing my favorite trail, but this is definitely one of my faves! It’s a 2.5 mile hike in (5 round trip) and is easy to moderate. Check it out, but make it fun! There are some fire pits above; bring the family or a date and roast some hot dogs or s’mores or camp under the stars at the observation point. Just clean up after yourself and keep this treasure beautiful!

- One of my favorite things to do is to find arches and to compose a shot through the arch to make it look as though I were shooting out of a cave. The picture above is Babylon Arch (sometimes called Pentagon Arch). This hike is fairly easy with only slight elevation changes. It’s roughly 2 miles round trip and is surrounded by many other great trails.

- Hey guys! My name is Alan from St. George, Utah. I have always been an outdoor enthusiast but last summer I decided to pick up photography. I read everything I could and practiced daily. I started with an iPhone and Pioneer Park (in St. George, Utah) was my proving grounds. Sunrise and sunset have been my favorite times to shoot. This park, although small, is a must see when passing through St. George and is perfect for kids and families.
